Deceit, Dishonesty and Abortion
Jun 3, 2022
We are talking about abortion, the deceit and dishonesty part of the title is what we are fed too much of when the media delivers what they call “fact.” Truthfully, I’m not sure that even the wisest of philosophers would ever conceive an opinion that all would agree on. Just the same, I am a columnist and I write about things, even very controversial things.
Let me start by reiterating my previous stated position on abortion.
“I do not believe that abortion is right or moral, while on the other hand, I believe a woman has rights with her body. Or, to put it another way, should one person have the right to dictate to another person what they can and cannot do with their own body?” Or, what is moral or immoral. That said, the foundation of my opinion about abortion and women’s rights is more complicated than that. It is based on what I find in searching the Scriptures, searching the Media, and my observations.
Let’s start with Scriptures.
Psalms 106:35-38 NLT
Instead, they mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs. They worshiped their idols, which led to their downfall. They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder.
Heath D. Dewrell
Among the many religious acts condemned in the Hebrew Bible, child sacrifice stands out as particularly horrifying. The idea that any group of people would willingly sacrifice their own children to their god(s) is so contrary to modern moral sensibilities that it is difficult to imagine that such a practice could have ever existed. Nonetheless, the existence of biblical condemnation of these rites attests to the fact that some ancient Israelites, in fact, did sacrifice their children. Indeed, a close reading of the evidence—biblical, archaeological, epigraphic, etc.—indicates that there are at least three different types of Israelite child sacrifice, each with its own history, purpose, and function.
It is said that loud drums and horns made so much noise in the ceremony that the screams of the babies could not be heard.
The previous texts sum up an idea of what the Scriptures say over and over about abortion. Although throwing a living child onto a flaming altar to appease a Canaan God is a little more radical than the abortion techniques used in a modern abortion clinic, while most Christians see them as similar.
Other than various places where it describes the sanctity of the unborn, I don’t find any reference to “Abortion” exactly. So, where does that leave us – As Christians, we must ask ourselves; “What would Jesus have said about abortion”?
As I am sure you know, the Supreme Court is debating whether to change the Roe vs. Wade opinion which, as you also know, gives almost untethered liberty for a woman to abort her fetus. I was reluctant to say “Baby” because no matter what I think, the discussion is still raging as to whether the Fetus is a Baby or not and I see no reason for me to get drawn into that fruitless and unprovable debate, even though most unborn babies have a lot of movement and apparently feel pain of some sort or degree. Frankly, I believe that the debate in the Supreme Court has nothing to do with whether this or whether that, but whether the question of abortion is a matter for the Federal Government or State Government. And as I see it, if the Federal Government is in control, it means that the decisions around abortion will be further away from the people and Federal Government is much more susceptible to manipulation by the few with a private agenda and the abortion industry. If you’ve watched Government in action for any length of time, you know this is how it works. And so, even though State Governments are not perfect, they more nearly represent the regional desires of the people. You may remember the old cliche “I think thou protestist too loudly.” It fits in conjunction with the fight to keep Roe vs Wade in tact.
As far as “Women’s Rights” are concerned, if I were a woman, I don’t believe I would want someone in DC dictating my rights. But if it is my State Government, at least I would have a chance to fight back if someone else tries to make this critical decision for me.
I said earlier in this discussion that I believe that abortion is immoral. From the beginning to now, I have not changed my opinion. But even more, I believe that Abortion, except under well-defined circumstances, is unfortunate. Unfortunate to the point that so many would-be mothers have lost that instinctive desire to love and nourish her unborn baby from the time she first becomes aware that she is pregnant for sure. It is easy to find story after story where a new mother willingly chanced her health and life to fulfill this spectacular God created miracle, even smiling at the thumping in her tummy.

Ring Lardner.
